Christmas comes early for Woughton

Councillors and staff at Woughton Community Council were faced with a broken-down freezer where meat and trimmings for the Christmas lunches was lost. With dozens of people due to attend meals this week, it looked like it would be vegetables only, until local supermarkets stepped in.

Cllr Sue Smith, Chair of Woughton Community Council, said
“When we came in on Monday to find a freezer full of defrosted meat, we were worried that we would have to cancel the meals, which we provide for those on their own, those who might not have a Christmas lunch and those who benefit from the social sharing of food. Thanks to the wonderful people at Morrisons, Sainsburys and Tesco, we can make sure that everyone can share some Christmas cheer’.

Tesco at Kingston, Morrisons at the Leisure Plaza and Sainsburys at the Hub all made a massive effort and donated meat, veggies and all the usual accompaniments, meaning that the festive feasts will take place.

Cllr Donna Fuller, Leader of Woughton council said
“This time of year is difficult for many people. Here in Woughton, we are lucky to have volunteers and loads of community members who go out of their way to make sure Christmas happens for everyone. A huge thank you to all the retailers who have been so generous and helped make sure that not only will the meals take place, but they will be even more special knowing that others in the city have helped out”.

As well as the meals, Woughton also works with the ‘Big Family Charity’ to provide hampers for families in the parish and beyond. With over 100 hampers being created and delivered this year, plus the annual ‘Santa Sleigh’ round the parish, Christmas has well and truly started in Woughton.
