FRUITS OF OUR LABOUR

All home grown at our Community Garden

FOOD WASTE

This year the Garden now has a Co-ordinator working to get the site operational and ready for the production of food for our community fridge and community café sessions. Over the winter they underwent online training aim at providing candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to run a successful Community Garden. As well as creating a more appealing space that the community will want to spend time in they have also coordinated activities for the community payback team who have been instrumental in the development of the site.

Composting

The garden is now more closely linked to our Community Fridge and Community Café as since the installation of the new composting system we now process and compost the food waste from both the fridge and café at the garden. Our first batch of compost has already gone on to be used in one of our main beds saving the need to buy in fertilizers.

Volunteering

We are currently in the process of recruiting a core of regular volunteers. This will be done in conjunction with regular open garden sessions.

visitors can come into the garden and take part in gardening activities, help in the day to day running of the garden and helping the garden to achieve its aims. Residents will also have the opportunity to use the polytunnel to sow their own seeds and once established take away to grow at home
Once established we will look into expanding the involvement of volunteers in helping to improve other sites across the parish that are in need of improvement. Low and slow growing shrubs grown at the garden will be the distributed across the parish with the aim of reducing regular maintenance of shrub beds, around trees and street furniture.
The main challenges with as with most community projects are that weekday hours do not always coincide with community availability. Therefore larger events have to be run on weekends or school holidays to ensure participation.
