EAGLESTONE PARK WINS GREEN FLAG AWARD!

The Eagle Park at Eaglestone has won the green flag award. Eaglestone Residents got together on Thursday 23rd July 2009 to recieve the award and hold a celebration. Parish Councillor for Eaglestone, Tony Mercer who is also chair of Eaglestone Residents Association, thanked Maurice Barnes from Milton Keynes Council and all the residents who had supported the project.

Named after a local field and taking its street names from birds of prey, developers and local field names, Eaglestone featured many firsts for Milton Keynes. The development of the Eaglestone concept began in 1972 by architect Ralph Erskine as an embryo urban village. The houses were built in traffic free areas with walkways enabling safe access for residents to the local park which dominates the centre of the residential area. Eaglestone Local Park is a nine acre refuge in which you could easily forget the close proximity of city life. Areas of grassland and woodland are managed to increase biodiversity of both flora and fauna while other areas are maintained for informal sport, recreation and relaxation. A special piece of art -‘Griffin’ by Lesley Bonner is located in one of the two popular play areas. The Activity Centre adjacent to the park provides squash courts, an all weather sports area and meeting place, complimenting provision within the park. Regular events throughout the year encourage local participation within the park and development of facilities within the park continues with local involvement. Central Milton Keynes is just a mile away and about a 10 to 15 minute walk. The parks of the Ouzel Valley and Grand Union canal are in the adjoining grid square with linked access to the Peartree Lane wildlife corridor via the citywide network of redways, which are suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
