Carnival 2009

WOUGHTON PARISH CARNIVAL
Saturday 13th June 2009
The sun shone and the rain was kept at bay for the annual event that offers fun for all the family.
Over 300 people took part in the procession from community groups and schools based within the Woughton Parish boundaries. Many colourful costumes were made, with groups being assisted by the carnival arts organisation Festive Road, based on the theme of 'Take Flight'. These were all made possible thanks to the additional support from Coffee Hall and Netherfield Residents Association and Beanhill Action Group who successfully bid for grant funding from the Community Foundation. From Spitfires and the Red Barrows to bees and a hot air balloon, both young and old walked and rode along the route through Netherfield, Beanhill, Coffee Hall and Leadenhall before arriving at the Woughton Leisure Centre.
The Festivities continued at the Leisure Centre throughout the afternoon following presentations by the Woughton Parish Ambassador Janet Richardson. The crowds were treated to performances by dance groups, kick boxers and singers who encouraged audience participation at every opportunity. In addition to the arena displays there were plenty of ways in which to support community organisations in their quest to raise funds and distribute information with stalls providing everything from the obligatory tombola and guess the name of the teddy to being able to find out more about the African culture and advice on how to start up your own business. There were also plenty of ways in which to expend a bit of energy with bouncy castles, paintball, slides, ball pool, rodeo bull and swimming, most of which were provided free of charge.
The new Carnival Court smiled and waved their way throughout the day and started their fundraising quest with a grand draw that raised almost £100. All money raised by the Court in 2009/10 will be donated to Willen Hospice.
Thanks go out to Leaf It Out of Netherfield for providing the flowers and Perrys Peugeot of Aylesbury who supplied the car and driver for the day.
The Carnival can only be made possible thanks to the support and dedication of the Woughton Parish Council officers and members and the many volunteers who give up their time freely to ensure that the event was such a success.
Plans are already underway for next year and we need YOU. Would you like to play a more active role in the organisation of the event? Do you attend a group that would be interested in taking part? If the answer is yes then please get in touch. please add contact details
